The Ganpati festival (also called Ganesha festival) is one of the biggest festivals in Maharashtra, and during this time thousands of people staying at Mumbai travel to their native places in the Konkan region and Goa for the festive celebrations.
Many of these people usually prefer to travel from Mumbai to Goa by train, however due to the heavy demand for train seats in the Ganpati festival, the regular Mumbai-Goa trains do not suffice. Hence nearly every year the Railways arranges for special trains that ply from Mumbai to Goa and back during this festival season.
This year in 2011 also, the Konkan Railway in coordination with Central Railway has arranged for 2 special trains that will ply from Mumbai to Goa and back again. These trains will be operational from 25-Aug-2011 to 12-Sep-2011. The Ganesh Chaturthi is on 1-Sep-2011.
